华人第一情色社区鈥檚 Division of Student Affairs and Division of Academic Affairs has received an anonymous grant for more than $764,000 to fund a new, comprehensive mentoring program called 鈥淭he Mentoring Project at FAU,鈥 designed to assist with improving student success.

鈥淢entoring builds strong connections between students, faculty and staff,鈥 said Edward Pratt, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate studies. 鈥淭he mentoring project complements the tremendous strides FAU has already made in the area of academic advising, helping to ensure that students stay in college, and continue their progress toward graduation.鈥

FAU faculty and staff, as well as upper division and graduate students, will be trained as mentors to first-year college students, with an emphasis on minority students and those in STEM majors. By 2017, the program also will include the mentoring of incoming transfer students.

鈥淔AU has not had the capacity to implement this type of structured program in the past,鈥 said Jennifer Bebergal, assistant dean for retention at FAU鈥檚 Center for Learning and Student Success. 鈥淭his funding will give us the ability to reach those who could most benefit from mentoring and help them connect with the best mentoring opportunity to fit their needs.鈥

The grant will fund administration for the project, as well as for training and professional development, mentoring events, mentor recognition, course materials, and stipends for peer mentors.

For more information about the project, contact Jennifer Bebergal at bebergal@fau.edu or Katie Burke at kburke19@fau.edu.
